Three-time defending conference champion Trinity College will be in pursuit of a fourth NESCAC title this weekend during the 2010 NESCAC Women’s Squash Championship. The three-day tournament kicks off on Friday afternoon with first round action at Trinity’s George A. Kellner Squash Center in Hartford, Conn. The event continues throughout the weekend with championship bracket matches taking place at Trinity and consolation matches at Wesleyan’s Rosenbaum Squash Center. The 2010 NESCAC Women’s Squash Championship will conclude on Sunday, Feb. 7, with the final taking place at 1:30 p.m.

Trinity College will look to win its fourth consecutive conference title this weekend during the 2010 NESCAC Men’s Squash Championship. The three-day event starts Friday evening with three first round matches at Trinity’s George A. Kellner Squash Center. The tournament continues throughout the weekend with championship bracket matches taking place at Trinity and select consolation matches at Wesleyan’s Rosenbaum Squash Center on Saturday. Middlebury won its third straight game as the 10th-ranked Panthers earned a 5-3 victory over #5 Plattsburgh in Kenyon Arena. The win avenges an earlier 3-1 loss to the Cardinals (13-4-4) at the PrimeLink Tournament. The Panthers (10-3-4) return to action when they host Norwich on Friday night and St. Michael’s on Saturday.

Middlebury shot an impressive .477 from the floor as they picked up a 74-64 road win at the Albany College of Pharmacy. The Panthers held a huge 50-26 advantage on the boards, converting 6 of 11 from three-point range.

The Panther men’s squash team now stands at 15-6 after returning from a long weekend. The 15 wins tie last year’s mark for most victories in just the third year as a varsity program. Middlebury played six matches over three days, competing in four different states on the trip. Vassar fell 9-0 on the trip-opener, before Middlebury lost by the same score to #4 Princeton.

The Middlebury women’s squash team returned home from a lengthy road trip that saw them play six matches over three days in four different states. The 13th ranked Panthers went 4-2 on the trip, with some impressive results. The trip opened with a 9-0 loss to #6 Stanford at Williams.

Middlebury recently celebrated “Girls Sports Day” on Sunday, January 24th in The Bubble and Natatorium on campus. Students from Middlebury’s swimming, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer and softball teams participated, with 125 girl scouts from the surrounding area who were involved in the activities. The event took place over a four-hour span from 1:00-5:00 p.m. that afternoon.
Participants rotated through stations were they were taught the skills of that particular sport with Middlebury student-athletes. They were also able to spend some time in the pool with Middlebury swimmers.

Middlebury had little trouble with Wesleyan as they extended their unbeaten streak to six games with a 9-0 win over the Cardinals. The victory was the 403rd of his career for Middlebury (12-4-1, 9-2-1) head coach Bill Mandigo, but the first against his brother Doug, the interim head coach of Wesleyan (3-14, 1-11). The seventh-ranked Panthers improve to 39-0-2 all-time vs. Wesleyan, and return to action next weekend at Conn. College and Hamilton.

Middlebury extended its winning streak to five games as the Panthers avenged an earlier season loss with a 2-1 win over Trinity (14-2-2, 7-2-2) in Kenyon Arena. The Panthers (11-4-1, 8-2-1) hold an 19-2-2 all-time series advantage over the Bantams as they return to action on Sunday when they host Wesleyan at 3:00 p.m.

In an anticipated match-up of two teams ranked in the top ten nationally, Williams topped Middlebury 79-64 in front of a huge crowd at Pepin Gym on Saturday. The fourth-ranked Ephs improve to 19-1 overall and 5-0 in NESCAC play, while eighth-ranked Middlebury drops to 17-2 and 4-1 in conference action. For the game the Ephs shot .537 from the field and connected on 8/16 threes, while Middlebury hit .355 and was 6/21 from behind the arc.

The Ephs (15-4, 4-0) were solid from the floor at .443, while Middlebury struggled shooting, connecting on .333 of its shots. The Panthers did hold a 46-38 rebounding advantage in the contest.

A second Middlebury College alumnus has claimed the final spot on 2010 Olympic Cross Country Ski Team. Simi Hamilton of Aspen, Colo., a former All-American at Middlebury, was announced Thursday after the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) received an 11th and final quota spot. Hamilton, who graduated from Middlebury last spring with a degree in Geology, joins former teammate Garrott Kuzzy ’06 as members of the U.S. Team. The duo join former Panthers Andrew Johnson (’02-Salt Lake, ’06-Torino), Dorcas Denhartog ’87 (’88-Calgary, ’92-Albertville, ’94-Lillehammer) and Sue Long ’82 (’84-Sarajevo) as nordic skiing Olympians. Middlebury is now the only NCAA program with more than one Olympian slated to compete in Vancouver; Northern Michigan has one.

Former Middlebury College nordic skier Garrott Kuzzy ‘06 of Minneapolis, Minn. has been named to the U.S. Olympic Team, officials from the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) announced today. He joins former Panthers Andrew Johnson (’02-Salt Lake, ’06-Torino), Dorcas Denhartog ’87 (’88-Calgary, ’92-Albertbille, ’94-Lillehammer) and Sue Long ’82 (’84-Sarajevo) as nordic skiing Olympians. Kuzzy earned his degree from Middlebury in 2006, graduating with a double major in German and geography. He was also a four-year member of the men’s cross country team, where he earned All-NESCAC and All-New England honors, while competing in the NCAAs during his junior year. Middlebury and Northern Michigan are the only two NCAA programs with an alum on the Olympic team.

Middlebury College men’s swimmer Schuyler Beeman (Guilford, Conn.) has been named the NESCAC Performer of the Week. Beeman won the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events during a dual meet with Union this past weekend, posting times of 21.90 and 48.57, respectively. He was also the lead-off leg on the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team, as his time of 21.87 proved to be the best of the season in the 50-yard freestyle.

The Panther men's squash team returned to action with another busy week. The 17th-ranked Panthers opened with a 6-3 loss to #16 St. Lawrence at home on Friday night. Middlebury won games in five of the six matches they lost, in a tightly-contested match.

The 13th ranked Middlebury women's squash team had another busy weekend, with four matches taking place over three days. The Panthers played all weekend without #1 Avery Tilney, who was out with an injury. Friday night, Middlebury hosted St. Lawrence, defeating the Saints, 9-0.

Middlebury head coach Bill Mandigo won his 400th game as the Panthers (9-4-1) defeated Williams (5-7-2) for the second time in as many nights, this time by a score of 6-2 at the Kenyon Arena. The 22-year head coach improves his career record to 400-102-21, with more wins than any other coach in the history of women’s collegiate hockey. Middlebury out shot Williams 39-11 on the night, as they improve to 58-3-2 in their all-time series with the Ephs.

Ranked 10th nationally in the latest D3Hoops.com poll, Middlebury (16-1, 4-0 NESCAC) remained atop the NESCAC standings, tied with fifth-ranked Williams, after holding off Wesleyan (6-11, 0-4) for a 77-69 road win. Middlebury, the defending NESCAC tournament champion, has now won six in a row since being upset at home by Colby-Sawyer following a 10-0 start.

Middlebury dropped its second straight game as they Panthers suffered a 4-0 road loss at the hands of St. Anselm. The win was the first for the Hawks 7-6-1 (5-5-1 ECAC East) over the Panthers (4-2-4 NESCAC) in 16 years.

New England College netted five unanswered third period goals lifting the Pilgrims past visiting Middlebury 7-4 in men’s ice hockey action Friday evening. With the win the Pilgrims even their overall record at 7-7-2, while the loss is just the second on the season for the Panthers who drop to 7-2-4 overall.

This week EISA skiers, coaches and fans load in the vans for a drive to Vermont. The last time St. Michael's hosted a carnival was 2007. Alpine events at Smugglers Notch in Jeffersonville, VT include both Giant Slalom and Slalom. Friday's event is a Giant Slalom for both Men and Women. Saturday's event is a Slalom for both Men and Women.
The Nordic events of the St. Michael's Carnival take place at Sleepy Hollow, Huntington, VT. Friday is a 10/15km Freestyle individual start race. Saturday is a Men's and Women's Classic Sprint Relay and it is not a NCAA qualifier race.

The 14th-ranked Panthers have now won a dozen straight matches after a season-opening loss. The Panther indoor track teams were in action again last weekend, taking part in the Wesleyan Invitational. Twelve different athletes qualified for New England’s with several impressive performances at the meet. First-year athlete Emily Dodge (Auburn, Maine) won the long jump (15’6.25”) and triple jump (34’1.5”), while sophomore Marc Delaney (Wading River, N.Y.) earned a victory in the weight throw (40’3.25”).

Middlebury built a double-digit lead midway through the first half en route to a 66-53 win over Tufts at Pepin Gym on Saturday. With the win, the 10th ranked Panthers improve to 14-1 overall and 2-0 in NESCAC play as the Jumbos drop to 3-10 and 0-2 in the conference. Despite being out-rebounded by Tufts 57-40 and 33-17 on the offensive glass, Middlebury held the Jumbos to .257 shooting from the floor.

The Middlebury College ski teams opened up their 2010 season with a trip to New York for the St. Lawrence Carnival. Dartmouth won the event with 957 points, followed by UVM (849), UNH (828) and Middlebury (685). The men's GS squad and the women’s 5K classical group both finished in second place in their respective events.

Middlebury dropped its first NESCAC game of the season as the Panthers fell 62-56 to 11th-ranked Tufts in Pepin Gym. The Jumbos (13-2, 1-1) bounced back after seeing its 12-game winning streak snapped at Williams yesterday, by shooting a red-hot .571 (8-14) from behind the three-point arc. Tufts also shot an impressive .462 from the floor, as Middlebury (8-5, 1-1) made just 1 of 9 three’s on the afternoon.

Andrew Locke posted a career-high with 25 points, and matched his personal best with seven blocks, to go along with nine rebounds and 10/11 shooting. The 10th ranked Panthers improve to 13-1 and 1-0 in NESCAC play, while Bates drops to 6-7 and 0-1 in league play. Middlebury settled for its fourth tie of the season as the Panthers earned a point with a 2-2 NESCAC road game at Trinity. Bantam Ryan Crapser scored with just 1:34 remaining on the clock to force the game into overtime, after Trinity had trailed 2-0. Trinity moves to 6-4-2, while seventh-ranked Middlebury goes to 6-1-4. The Panthers held a 40-23 shots advantage in the contest.

The 2010 EISA Carnival season kicks of this weekend. St. Lawrence University hosts the first carnival in Lake Placid. In an Olympic year it is fitting that that first Carnival takes place and Lake Placid- an Olympic town.
The Nordic races take place Friday, January 15 and Saturday, January 16 at Mt. Van Hovenberg. Friday the women race a 5km classic and the men race a 10km classic on the Ladies 5km Course. Saturday the women's race a 15km freestyle and the men's race 20km freestyle. Both Saturday races are mass starts and use the Biathlon Trails.
The alpine races take place Friday, January 15 and Saturday, January 16 at Whiteface Mountain. On Friday both the women's and men's Giant Slalom are on Thruway/ Drapers Drop. On Saturday both women's and men's Slalom races are on Drapers Drop. Alpine races will be posted online live at

The #17 Middlebury men's squash team began its second semesters with a hard-fought 5-4 win at home over 16th ranked Amherst. The Panthers improve to 6-1 on the year and return to action at the Yale Round Robin this weekend. The first wave of matches left Middlebury ahead 3-1, as wins at #1 by Valentin Quan and #5 by Eliot Jia sealed the victory in the second group of contests.

Ending a brief three-game skid this season, all against nationally ranked teams, Middlebury (6-3, 5-1 NESCAC) gradually pulled away from its host Wesleyan (1-9, 0-7) for a 6-0 women’s ice hockey victory. Maria Bourdeau and Lauren Greer led the Panthers with a goal and an assist apiece as 11 players contributed to Middlebury’s six tallies. The win kept the Panthers unbeaten streak intact vs. Wesleyan as Middlebury has never lost (40-0-3) in the 43 meetings of the teams dating back to 1979.

Trinity’s Kim Weiss scored the game-winning goal on a penalty shot 1:39 into overtime to lead the Bantams to a 2-1 victory over the Middlebury. Trinity, ranked No. 8 in the nation, improves to 8-1-2 overall and 3-1-2 in the NESCAC with its fifth win in a row and its first-ever win against Middlebury in 21 tries, while the No. 5-ranked Panthers fall to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the league with their third consecutive defeat.

Nick Resor scored the game-winner on a rebound from just outside the crease, giving Middlebury a 3-1 win over Hamilton in NESCAC action in Kenyon Arena. Resor’s fifth of the season came at 14:02 of the third, after Ken Suchoski’s backhander had been saved. Middlebury struggled from the floor as the seventh-ranked Panthers (10-1) suffered their first loss of the season, an 86-76 defeat at the hands of Colby-Sawyer (7-5) in Pepin Gym. Middlebury made just 5 of 27 (.185) three-point attempts on the night, while connecting on 13 of 27 (.481) free throws. Colby-Sawyer was an impressive 9 of 17 (.529) from behind the arc, while connecting on 27 of 37 (.529) from the charity stripe. Fifty fouls were whistled in the contest, as Middlebury held a slight 47-43 edge on the boards. Middlebury returns to action at Skidmore on Saturday and Lyndon State on Sunday before opening up NESCAC play next weekend.

Middlebury won its sixth in a row, topping visiting Colby-Sawyer 68-60 on Thursday night at Pepin Gym. The win streak is the longest for the Panthers since a six-game run during the 2005-06 season. The game saw ten lead changes, including the final one by Middlebury with 4:36 in the second half on a lay-in from Steffany Surrett, which led to a decisive 11-0 run.

Middlebury continued its winning ways with a hard-fought 81-75 victory over Plattsburgh at Pepin Gym on Tuesday night. With the win, the seventh-ranked Panthers up their record to a glossy 10-0, while the Cardinals drop to 7-2 on the season. A combined 52 fouls were whistled in the game.

Middlebury closed the game on a 14-4 run to pick up a 62-52 win over Plattsburgh in Pepin Gym. The win is the fifth straight for the Panthers (5-3), as they prepare to host Colby-Sawyer on Thursday at 5:30. The Cardinals drop their third straight game and fall to 2-6 on the season. The Middlebury defense forced 31 turnovers in the game, taking advantage with 28 points.

On Saturday, January 9th following the Middlebury vs. Amherst game at 4:00 p.m., the Middlebury men’s hockey team will offer its annual “Skate With The Panthers”. Middlebury Friends of Panther Hockey will provide team photos, with players available to skate with and sign autographs after the game. The game is also one of two (1/9 & 1/30) “white outs” where all fans are encouraged to wear white to the game.

Plattsburgh’s Megan DiJulio tipped in a blast from Erika Shaubel on the power play to give the second-ranked Cardinals a 4-1 win over Middlebury in the third-place game at the 5th Annual Panther/Cardinal Classic Tournament in Vermont. Plattsburgh (8-1) added a pair of empty-netters in the victory, as fifth-ranked Middlebury falls to 5-2 on the year.

After four years in college, Simi Hamilton isn’t supposed to know how to sprint. Try telling that to Mike Hinckley. With 500 meters to go in the freestyle sprint at Kincaid Park in Anchorage, Hinckley made a huge move on the field, passing Hamilton on the outside of the last significant hill on the course. After finishing second last year, it looked like Hinckley had this one in the bag.

Middlebury College men’s basketball player Ryan Sharry (Braintree, Mass.) has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week. Sharry averaged 13.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks/game to lead Middlebury to its best start in school history at 9-0. Sharry shot .571 from the floor, scoring 14 points with seven boards in a win at RPI. He returned home to score 13 points with 11 rebounds and six blocks in Middlebury's win over Hamilton. Sharry and the Panthers will host Plattsburgh on Tuesday night at 7:30, before entertaining Colby-Sawyer on Thursday at 7:30.

Middlebury College men’s hockey player Martin Drolet (Lachine, Que.) has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week for the second time this season. The sophomore scored three goals and added three assists to lead Middlebury to a pair of wins en route to capturing the 2010 Middlebury College Holiday Classic. He had a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win over Babson, before scoring twice with a helper in a 5-2 win over S. Maine in the title game. Drolet was named the tournament's M.V.P. The Panthers will host Hamilton this Friday at 7:00, before battling Amherst at 4:00 on Saturday.

Middlebury captured the 18th annual Middlebury College Holiday Classic with a 5-2 win over Southern Maine in the title game. Martin Drolet notched three goals with three assists over the two days to earn tournament M.V.P. honors. Babson defeated Salve Regina 5-1 earlier in the day to win the third-place game.

Middlebury’s Brittany Perfetti opened the second half with a three, building a double-digit lead as the Panthers cruised to a 66-42 win over WPI at Pepin Gym on Sunday. With the victory, Middlebury (4-3) extended their win-streak to four in a row, while the Engineers drop to 7-4 on the season. In the first-ever meeting between the two schools, Middlebury went 5/7 from behind the arc and held a 38-22 rebounding advantage.

In a tournament featuring winners of all eight Division III national champions in tournament history, Middlebury hosted the fifth annual Panther/Cardinal Classic at Kenyon Arena. Elmira (’02, ’03) and Middlebury (’04, ’05, ’06) met in the first game on Sunday morning, with Plattsburgh (’07, ’08) and Amherst (’09) meeting in the second match-up. All four teams are currently ranked in the top five nationally: Plattsburgh (1), Amherst (2), Middlebury (3), Elmira (5). Elmira earned a 3-2 overtime win over Middlebury in the first game of the day, advancing to the championship game on Monday at 4:00 p.m. against the winner of the Plattsburgh/Amherst game. Middlebury will take part in the third-place game at 7:00.

Middlebury broke open a halftime tie against Hamilton, pulling out a 62-47 victory at Pepin Gym on Saturday. The Panthers’ defense held the Continentals to .229 shooting from the floor in the second half and .258 for the game. With the win, the Panthers extend their school-best start to a season at 9-0, while the Continentals even their overall mark at 4-4.

Middlebury opened up its second semester with a 4-0 win over Babson at the 18th annual Middlebury College Holiday Classic. The Panthers advance to the title game on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. against the winner of the Salve Regina/Southern Maine game played later tonight. Babson will take part in the consolation game at 4:00 p.m. The shutout win over Babson was the first for Middlebury since they earned three straight shutouts over the Beavers in ’99, ’00 and ’01.

Tim Edwards posted a double-double in non-conference action at East Campus Arena. The Engineers fall to 6-2 on the season, seeing their four-game win streak snapped. It's been another solid start to the winter season for Middlebury College Athletic teams. The Panthers have a combined record of 31-11-2 as they enter the semester break.
Middlebury returns to action on December 30th when men's basketball team visits Rensselaer at 7:00 p.m. The women host W.P.I. on January 2nd, while the men host Hamilton on the 3rd at 4:00 p.m.
The men's hockey team hosts the annual Holiday Classic Tournament at the Chip Kenyon Arena on Saturday/Sunday, January 2nd and 3rd. Salve Regina battles Southern Maine at 1:00 p.m., while Middlebury hosts Babson at 4:00 p.m. The consolation and championship games are slated for January 3rd at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m.
The women host the Panther/Cardinal Classic on Sunday/Monday, January 3rd and 4th. The Panthers take on Elmira at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, while Plattsburgh meets Elmira at 1:00 p.m. The consolation and championship games are scheduled for Monday, January 4th at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m.

The Panther women’s squash team has won six of seven matches to open the season, earning five more victories last week. Middlebury had little trouble at the Wesleyan Round Robin, taking four matches on Saturday. The Panthers earned 9-0 wins over Wesleyan and Wellesley, while topping Northeastern and Smith, 8-1. Middlebury returned home to defeat the University of Vermont on Sunday, 9-0.
